Women of HYPED: Isabella Chan

Which team are you in? What is your role? Your responsibilities?

I have been part of the Simulation Team since the beginning of this academic year. We perform analytical and FEA simulations using software such as MATLAB and COMSOL. Our work necessitates the understanding of different systems on the pod and because of that we have also been working closely with other technical teams, which I really enjoy. At the beginning of the second semester, I joined the Communications sub team under Software. We are currently developing a server/client communication application in Java and C++ that receives pod statistics and sends commands to the pod from an outside base station. It has been a fantastic opportunity to gain experience in working for a large software project, and I have learned a lot from my peers.

What do you like the most about HYPED?

I have thoroughly enjoyed the innovative and passionate environment within HYPED, where everyone is extremely motivated to create the best and most realistic Hyperloop pod prototype. The work could be quite intense sometimes, especially for university students, and yet the immense dedication of the whole team is almost impossible to believe. I am super excited to see our final product and what we have accomplished this year!

Your most memorable moment or story in HYPED?

Our three-day exhibition at the Institute of Directors (IoD) Open House 2018 was one of my favourite events. In addition to it being a fun trip to London, it was also an eye-opening experience to make connections with professionals from diverse fields and to gain insights into different sectors through a series of inspiring talks. Another memorable event is the COMSOL workshop organised by the Simulation Team, which received an enthusiastic response from the other technical teams even under horrible weather conditions! It was really nice to contribute to the team by sharing the FEA knowledge we have acquired throughout the year, and we hope that everyone enjoyed it as much as we did.
